Picidae (Latin for woodpecker) is a Swiss art project by Mathias Jud and Christoph Wachter. The two have developed a method how Internet control and censorship can be elegantly bypassed:
About the so-called pici server any web address can be entered via a search mask. The server creates an image of the desired website and this converted image file is immediately presented in the browser. After this conversion into an image, the links remain clickable and therefore usable. When you click, the linked page opens, which is also displayed as an image.
The (Chinese) censors usually only look for suspicious texts and sensitive keywords on the Internet. With Picidae the picture is used as a kind of encryption, the censor filters are therefore no longer able to recognize the text within a picture. I think the project follows an absolutely brilliant approach and as you can try it out yourself, it works very well
Picidae works without additional programs in the browser and does not require any technical knowledge from the user.
