With “Arrival” Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Enemy) turns to the science fiction genre. The film, which was initially titled “Story of Your Life,” is based on a short story by Ted Chiang that won several awards and was published in 1998. In it, the writer explores language in the context of a sci-fi setting and weaves together the story of the protagonist Dr. Louise Banks also with memories of her daughter. The screenwriter Eric Heisserer, who was hired for the adaptation, had previously attracted attention primarily through material from the horror milieu (The Thing, Final Destination 5 and A Nightmare on Elm Street). The linguist (Amy Adams) is asked for help by the military (including Jeremy Renner). The arrival of an extraterrestrial spacecraft in Earth's orbit causes a stir around the world. The strange beings are trying to make contact. The linguist is now supposed to help decipher extraterrestrial communication. Ultimately, humanity would like to know about the aliens' intentions before they land on the planet. For a long time it is unclear whether the galactic visitors are friends or invaders, but then the woman responsible for the contact suddenly begins to have visions that explain the reason for the aliens' arrival...
