In 2012, the Grammy winner and multi-platinum seller Erik Francis Schrody aka Whitey Ford aka Everlast from a completely new angle at his acoustic solo concerts. After his incredibly successful time with «House Of Pain», which spawned genre anthems such as «Jump Around», Everlast shocked one or the other old fan in 1998 with his solo album «Whitey Ford Sings The Blues» , folk, country and rap-inspired album, he impressively demonstrated his vocal and musical ability. Titles such as "What it's like" and "Put Your Lights On" became world hits, sold more than 3 million albums and earned Everlast a Grammy. The follow-up albums «Eat At Whitey's» and «White Trash Beautiful» also found their buyers and so the transformation from rapper to man with guitar took place, you wouldn't have thought it possible. Today the brand new, twelve-track acoustic album "The Life Acoustic" was released.
For «House of Pain» was Everlast Songwriter and singer before turning to completely new territory in the late XNUMXs. His solo album "Whitey Ford Sings The Blues" hit like a bomb. Blues, folk, country and rap were the musical styles with which the singer demonstrated his enormous potential and musical creativity. Together with Carlos Santana he was awarded a Grammy for the song "Put your lights on". Now he's pulling the plug and delivering an acoustic album on which he offers quite a lot. It almost seems as if he's reinventing himself a bit. His interpretations and his voice have a lot of the style of Tom Waits or Nick Cave.
The opener "Sad Girl" really invites you to chill and hang out with a good glass of wine or whiskey, to be replaced by the grueling "Black Jesus", which comes from the album "Eat At Whitey's". Today and Broken pick up where Mr. Schrody left off. It doesn't bother anyone that the songs are already known and are now simply being presented in a different version. Here at the latest, Everlast's grandiose voice becomes apparent, which is inherent in the songs from beginning to end on «The Life Acoustic». «The Acoustic Life» is an unplugged album that deserves its name. No band with drums and all the trimmings is brought up here. In almost every song Everlast's voice can be heard along with a guitar and nothing more, nothing less. Schrody has tremendous singer/songwriter qualities and his arrangements are coherent and atmospheric. His voice is convincing and comes out even more strongly in these acoustic interpretations.
The tracks don't automatically get a melancholic touch either. Everlast does an excellent job of arranging the tracks in such a way that there is still some light shining through the darkness. And a track like "Stone in my hand" sounds even more like an accusation in acoustic version than the original. The more spirited tracks like "Weakness" or "Children's Story" also fit perfectly. "My Medicine" is a classic country number, again with piano accompaniment. With "Lonely Road" and "Grandma's Hand" he also delivers two blues-folk numbers in the tradition of the railroad songs of Woodie Guthrie or Pete Seeger. But House Of Pain aren't neglected either, and so Everlast offers the banger "Jump Around" as the last song as an acoustic version. Can it work? Yes, it works and even better than expected.
What is nice about the whole album is that Everlast announces almost every song by title before he starts singing. All in all, «The Life Acoustic» is a cool, groovy piece of music that shows further new facets in Everlast's artistic repertoire. The album is round and coherent, everything fits and fascinates. If you want to relax for three quarters of an hour and recharge your batteries, the album is just right for you, because the man and his guitar work perfectly. One wonders why Everlast didn't release the songs purely as acoustic works right from the start. They have what it takes and it's not a lie to say that certain songs sound even better without electricity. The minimalist implementation of the cover fits the performance of the songs. Thank you Everlast! This is how music can be fun even without electricity!
