Regisseur Josh Boone (Das Schicksal ist ein mieser Verräter) deutete es bereits mehrfach an, dass er mit «New Mutants» trotz jugendlicher Darsteller nicht etwa einen Young-Adult-Film, sondern einen waschechten Horror-Thriller abliefern will. Der folgende Trailer sieht nun ganz danach aus, als sei ihm das gelungen. Nicht alle Mutanten können ihre Fähigkeiten auch tatsächlich kontrollieren, besonders wenn diese gerade am Erwachen sind. Erstmals präsentiert sich die X-Men Reihe im waschechten Horror-Gewand, was nach den Comedy- und Western-Eskapaden von Deadpool und Logan eigentlich nur konsequent ist. So hält der Trailer auch zahlreiche Schreckmomente für uns bereit – von Mauern, die sich wie von Geisterhand bewegen, bis hin zu unheilvoll maskierten Mutanten und inneren wie äusseren Dämonen, die es zu bekämpfen gilt.
Maisie Williams lässt Arya Stark für dieses Projekt hinter sich und erlebt in «New Mutants» mit einer Gruppe begabter Teenager einen Horrorbesuch in einem vermeintlichen Krankenhaus. Schnell stellt die Gruppe fest, dass die angebliche Gesundheitseinrichtung, in die sie gebracht wurden, eher Schrecken als Hilfe für sie bereithält. Die Kids verfügen allesamt über besondere Fähigkeiten, sie sind Mutanten. Doch weder können sie mit ihren Kräften besonders gut umgehen, noch scheinen die finsteren «Ärzte» in der Einrichtung diese Kräfte im Sinne der Teenager nutzen zu wollen. Als neue «X-Men» sind darin unter anderem Maisie Williams (Wolfsbane), Anya Taylor-Joy (Magik), Henry Zaga (Sunspot), Blu Hunt (Mirage) und Charlie Heaton (Cannonball) zu sehen.
