Triple 9 or 999 is an identifier that no American police officer on duty wants to hear over the radio, it means: Officer down! However, when a group of corrupt police officers are blackmailed by the Russian mafia into carrying out an almost impossible robbery, the riot over a shot police officer seems the perfect distraction from the coup. The question now arises as to whether the group is capable of sacrificing a cop from among their own ranks. The situation quickly gets out of hand when the unsuspecting and already doomed police novice thwarted the assassination attempt. This is the trigger to a breakneck action-packed finale, in which greed and revenge are the driving forces.
Triple 9 is based on a script by Matt Cook and landed on the so-called black list of the best previously unfilmed scripts in 2010. “Triple 9” was staged by John Hillcoat and there were some castling in the cast, in the meantime Cate Blanchett and Christoph Waltz were in conversation, first actor Shia LaBeouf was in conversation, but was initially introduced by Charlie Hunnam (Son's of Anarchy, Pacific Rim) until it was replaced again and ultimately by Casey Affleck (Interstellar). Confirmation, however, found among others Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul and Teresa Palmer. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie and Clifton Collins Jr. rounded off the impressive cast. At no time was it in question whether Nick Cave would be involved again: As a composer (“The Road”) as well as a screenwriter (as in “The Proposition” and “Lawless”) Cave has always followed his compatriot's career.
