Last Saturday evening, guitar god Slash was finally back on stage live in Switzerland. Wild, pitch-black curls, top hat, sunglasses and the Gibson «Les Paul» guitar at the ready - in short: Slash! His appearance is no less legendary than his nimble fingers, which elicit sounds from the electric guitar that hardly anyone else can. Slash, who achieved world fame with Guns N' Roses and according to "Time Magazine" is the second greatest electric guitarist of all time after Jimi Hendrix, plays an exclusive Swiss concert in the St. Jakobshalle Basel. Like last time Of course, Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge) and the Conspirators (Todd Kerns, Frank Sidoris and Brent Fitz) were there again and to sum it up, the gig was absolutely great!
Saul Hudson, as Slash's real name is, made history with Guns N' Roses and achieved world fame. He was able to sell over 100 million albums with them. In all, Slash has been nominated for a Grammy 7 times, including taking home the trophy once. The fact that Slash is still alive, unlike Hendrix, has more to do with luck than brains. The 49-year-old has already knocked on heaven's gate twice: in 1988, when he was found pumped full of heroin lying in front of the elevator door of a hotel in San Francisco - Slash had no pulse for a whole eight minutes. And in 2001 he got a pacemaker because he "almost drank himself to death". He hasn't drunk any alcohol since then and has also sworn off drugs. Playing the guitar is a much more exhilarating trip for him today.
After leaving Guns N'Roses as lead guitarist in 1996, he devoted himself to projects such as "Slash's Snakepit" or "Slash's Blues Ball" before working with Stone Temple Pilot frontman Scott Weiland and the former Guns N'Roses bandmates (all , besides Axl Rose) founded the rock band «Velvet Revolver». In between, he repeatedly held guest audiences with a wide variety of bands and musicians (including Lenny Kravitz, Michael Jackson, Alice Cooper and Brian May). Last year Slash also got into the film business and produced the horror film «Nothing left to fear». He has fulfilled an old dream, Slash has always been a big fan of horror films and production of the next strip will start at the end of the year.
Slash wrote rock history and is far from finished. His new album "World on Fire" was released in September, his third solo album in four years after "Slash" (2010) and "Apocalyptic Love" (2012). Both discs went from zero to number three in the Swiss charts. The breakthrough in his solo career was the album "Slash", on which he played with many rock greats such as Duff McKagan, Lemmy Kilmister, Dave Grohl, Fergie and Iggy Pop, which, in addition to the star on the "Walk of Fame" in Hollywood in front of the Hard Rock Café on Sunset Boulevard, brought him many other awards. Above all, his riffs, such as those from "Sweet Child O' Mine", which is considered the best in rock music, made him world famous and so he was of course inducted into the legendary "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame".
Slash is a perfectionist and a doer who lives the love of music in all its facets. For more than three years he has been touring around the world with «Alter Bridge» singer Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. He only allows himself short breaks, which he uses to record a new album or, most recently, to shoot horror films under his «Slasher Films» label. Slash was already playing in the band "Tidus Sloan" in the early 80s, then switched to "Road Crew" where he met Steven Adler for the first time. The two later founded the band "Hollywood Rose" together with Axl Rose, which later became "Guns N' Roses", with which Slash would eventually become world famous. But let's get back to the concert.
There is (almost) nothing better than being infatuated by playing the guitar to perfection on a rainy Saturday evening. Many other rock fans seemed to have thought the same thing, because the hall was very full, but I was a bit surprised that the "Joggeli" wasn't sold out. The Opening Band «Monster Truck» from Canada played a mixture of Southern and Psychedelic Rock and their sound reminds of times long past and still managed to come across as fresh and groovy. I didn't know this band until now and I have to say that this start into the evening was absolutely great! Brilliant sound and I can warmly recommend the current album «Furiosity» to every rock fan!
After a short break, Slash, who only takes off his sunglasses in bed, Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators were on stage. From the first guitar riff and from the first sound you were drawn into the spell of the band and you immediately noticed that only thoroughbred musicians were on stage who knew exactly what they were doing. So it was made difficult for you to focus your hearing and your gaze, you almost didn't know where to listen and look. You always had the feeling that if you devote your eyes and ears to Myles, you're paying too little attention to the guitar god Slash and vice versa. But Todd Kerns, Frank Sidoris and Brent Fitz from the Conspirators also put on a great show and the whole band played their hearts out.
Of course, as expected, some Guns N'Roses songs were played as well. Songs like “Night Train”, “Out Ta Get Me”, “Mr. Brownstone», «Rocket Queen» and, to my delight, «You Could Be Mine» have a well-deserved place in the setlist. As always, Myles Kennedy was very close to the audience and managed to animate not only the fans in the front row, but also the audience at the back to rock out. The singer also showed all his vocal skills and convinced the fans right down to the back rows. Especially with the new song "Bent To Fly" goosebumps were announced.
Slash's guitar solo, which he performed on "Rocket The Queen", became another of the many highlights of the evening. You got the feeling that the good guy didn't want to stop with the solo, because it wasn't just any solo, no, it was a slash solo as it should be. The audience listened in awe to the guitar god and Slash seemed to enjoy his moment completely. Another highlight of the evening was the classic "Sweet Child O' Mine", where the whole hall sang along and waved their arms in the air. As an encore, Slash performed "Paradise City" and the hall was boiling! The fans will remember this evening for a while. It was a superlative rock show of more than two hours. Slash, Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators once again proved what they're made of and sent the St. Jakobshalle into ecstasy.
