US actor Richard Kiel, who played the villain in two James Bond films with Roger Moore, died yesterday at a hospital in Fresno, California, at the age of 74. Kiel was hospitalized last week with a broken leg. The cause of his sudden death is not yet known. The 2,18 meter tall actor is best known for his role as a villain in the James Bond films. In "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Moonraker" Kiel played the so-called biter opposite Roger Moore and this role haunted him throughout his life.
In both Bond films, Kiel had to wear metal dentures that made him famous around the world and spoke only in exceptional cases, but he was happy to show his teeth, with which he could crack steel if necessary. Kiel had his first film appearance in "Eegah" in 1962. In the film, teenagers encounter a caveman who runs amok. In the meantime he worked as a bouncer, grave site salesman and math teacher in night schools. He later landed roles in several horror series. He made his final breakthrough as a “biter”, i.e. Jaws, as the biter was officially called.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, the actor has made numerous feature films and television films, working with Gene Wilder and Clint Eastwood, among others. Despite numerous appearances in a number of other films and TV shows, such as in the action strip "The hardest mile" or the sports comedy "Happy Gilmore", Kiel could not escape public perception as a "biter". He even took his prime role again in a film that has nothing to do with the Bond series. In 1999 he played the character for "Inspector Gadget". After being injured in an accident and unable to walk properly, he slowly stopped acting. "To this day I go out in sunglasses and a hat because people would call me 'Hey, biter!' from across the street," he told the Daily Mail newspaper at the beginning of the year. Kiel would have been 75 on Saturday.
In my opinion, he was the best Bond villain ever. An absolute cult figure. RIP bite!
