Hong Kong residents are currently protesting in large numbers for free elections. Police used pepper spray yesterday to disperse the crowd outside a government building. 29 people were injured and yet more than 100 protesters stayed in front of the building and shouted slogans. The protesters had gathered outside the local government headquarters to support a group of high school students who had stormed the grounds the night before.
For almost a week, students have been demonstrating against a decision by the National People's Congress in Beijing to only allow pre-selected candidates in the 2017 elections in the special administrative region. This makes it practically impossible for government critics to make it onto the list. The former British crown colony has been part of China again since 1997. However, the city enjoys extensive autonomy according to the principle of "one country, two systems", especially in the economic area.
