"Jim Button and Luke the Locomotive Driver" is based on the book of the same name by Michael Ende, which the German author published in 1960 and is one of the most successful and popular children's books in the German-speaking world. In 1962, the author also had the sequel “Jim Button and the Wild 13” follow his book. The film, directed by Dennis Gansel (Die Welle), is the first live-action adaptation of the popular story. In 1961, the Augsburger Puppenkiste published the two novels as black-and-white mini-series for television, followed by a color puppet adaptation in 1976. Other famous books by Michael Ende that have already been made into live-action films for the big screen are “The Neverending Story” (1984) and its sequels, and “Momo”. In this adaptation of the novel, Jim Button and Luke the engine driver experience adventures in the big world and meet monsters they never knew existed. Lummerland, the island with two mountains in the great ocean, has become too small to continue to house all of its inhabitants. The orphan boy Jim Button (Solomon Gordon), who was stranded here as a baby, therefore wants to leave the island together with his best friend Lukas, the engine driver (Henning Baum). On the way into the big wide world, the two experience some adventures that lead them, among other things, to the sea and into the air, into the desert, to Mandala and to Mrs. Mahlzahn's dragon city...
