It is well known that the cult Finnish folk metallers from Ensiferum are not bad parents on tour. In mid-April the guys gave their fans a rock-hard performance around the legendary Z7! Singer Petri Lindroos did his job not without the necessary charisma and the active part went to the last founding member Markus Toivonen and above all to the bassist Sami Hinkka, who acted wildly and like a berserk on stage. Ensiferum were actually support for Children of Bodom, who were also able to convince, but just didn't come across and so Ensiferum played them easily on the wall! Bangerherz, what more do you want?
On Tuesday, April 12th of this month, Children Of Bodom, Ensiferum and Machinae Supremacy were guests at the Z2011 in Pratteln as part of the Ugly World Tour 7 and really let it rip. First of all, Machinae Supremacy was allowed to do SID Metal, which is a mixture of melodic hard rock and chiptune and uses melodies from the time and style of the Commodore 64 as one of the central elements. So the guys are allowed to make the soundtrack to the computer game Jets'n'Guns and practically always use a SIDstation that contains the famous SID chip of the C-64. The sound didn't really convince me and so I was looking forward to the successor: Ensiferum. As soon as the intro of the last Ensiferum record sounded, it was clear that the crowd in front of the stage was about to tick off ...
A moshpit formed in front of the stage, in which the Finns were celebrated as they deserved. Ensiferum played a set that was distributed fairly across the previous releases, even though the band sounds more acoustic and folkier on disc today than they did when they debuted. It started with "From Afar" and "Into Battle", "Token of Time" and "Twilight Tavern" went straight forward and was a lot of fun that evening. Singer Petri Lindroos doesn't do his job without the necessary charisma. It is noticeable that the good Petri is anything but a front sow. Most of the time he places one foot on the monitor and yells fiercely into the microphone, only rarely does he break away from it and let his blond hair circle a few steps further back. The more active part therefore gets stuck with the last founding member Markus Toivonen and the bassist Sami Hinkka, who act correspondingly wildly on stage
The Norsemen let their blond hair fly around on stage and would certainly be at the forefront of a synchronized banging competition. Of course, the audience didn't want to be stingy and followed the request of a proper mosh pit as well as possible and celebrated the swords with "Guardians of Fate", "Ahti" and "Lai Lai Hei". "Iron" was then added as an encore and was able to really shake up the Z7 again.
The fact that the band uses skirts in the style of the Finnish flag as an outfit rounds off the appearance. Wonderful, this almost hour-long musical firestorm. No Ensiferum fan should have left an eye dry. The Finns are dominating the selected setlist:
- From Afar
- Into battle
- tokens of time
- Twilight Tavern
- Guardians of Fate
- Water god
- Lai Lai Hey
- Iron
What I also appreciated that evening was that the gentlemen came across as relatively taciturn and left more time for the music. Some viewers are sure to go home with massive sore muscles in their necks and numerous bruises. Today you could definitely experience a really great performance by the band. One who, with its fast-paced and fresh style, still has a lot in common with the original Heavy Metal despite its style. And I can only recommend everyone to see Ensiferum in the near future! Are your ready for Tata dada Taataa daadaa?
I thank art-noir.ch for the wonderful photos and Youtube users scale666 for the clips.
