Absolute bad news that I have at G must read! It can't be true! Very, very, a shame, such a great service
DivX actually wanted to outsource its Stage6 video platform into its own company. But the plans have not yet been implemented and so Stage2008 will end at the end of February 6.
DivX will discontinue its video service Stage6.com on February 28, 2008. Then the retrieval of the videos hosted on Stage6 will no longer be possible, uploads are no longer possible.
Similar to YouTube, users were able to exchange videos via the platform, but in significantly higher quality, encoded with the DivX codecs.
DivX wants to concentrate in future on its own core business, the licensing of DivX technology and the distribution of DivX content via third-party providers. In November 2007, DivX bought the German codec specialist MainConcept in order to support the H.264 video standard in the future.
It is more the success of Stage6 that is fatal. In June 2007 alone, 10 million unique visitors visited the site, in April 2007 the figure was 4 million. However, there are significant costs associated with running the site that DivX no longer wants to bear.
