Who infoweek.ch knows to report, Switzerland has approved the proposal Office Open XML (ooXML) as the ISO standard with 75% of the votes.
The outcome of this second vote was predictable for me. 3/4 of the participants came on behalf of Microsoft, after all they didn't want to spoil things with Redmond, no, they were certainly "confirmed" to take part in the voting. It is astonishing how openly and unabashedly everything is being done here to ensure that a standard is established. Obviously, in order to survive in the market, a single company like Microsoft can manipulate it to their liking. Neither technical nor legal circumstances or the dependence on a manufacturer are obstacles for a standard. Not to mention the lobbying done.
It is to be feared that if OpenXML has soon overcome the last hurdles to the ISO standard, that the Open Document Format will be forgotten after 2-3 years. As the past has taught us several times, nobody can believe that two standards will be complied with if one standard comes from a company with a 95% market share. In addition, if you know that in computer science, a standard is rarely adhered to more badly than right ...
UPDATE: Well, at least the ISO itself doesn't seem to be in such a hurry as with golem.de can be read. Then Microsoft will probably push through its standard in 2008.
