Scientists have discovered a species of shark off the coast of Central America that is said to glow in the dark, reports science magazine «Journal of Science Foundation«.
The sharks, discovered in the Pacific at depths of between 800 and 1500 meters, are believed to emit light, which the scientists say gives them the ability to fool potential victims, attract the attention of mates and deter larger predators. The skin of the shark is covered with a special luminous fabric (photophores). The color of the animals is also unusual: they are black, which is extremely rare in species of the deeper aquafauna. The new species of shark was named "Etmopterus benchley" after the author of the novel "Jaws", Peter Benchley. Recently, oceanographers have spotted dozens of light-emitting shark species, as well as the glowing sea turtle Eretmochelys imbricata.
