In Paul Trillos short film “A Truncated Story of Infinity” is about the everyday question: What if Vincent (Subject X) spoke to the strange woman on the street (Subject Y). And what if not? Maybe they would both just move on with their lives. But perhaps in an infinite universe there would be a different outcome to the story. Or two, or three, or infinitely many.
That is exactly what the many-worlds theory says. The physicist Hugh Everett III had this. formulated in the fifties. The theory, in a very simplified way, says that every possible quantum process produces its own universe, i.e. a parallel world. To put it more simply: every conceivable result of an action actually takes place in its own universe, and billions of new universes are created every millisecond. That sounds pretty crazy. But since there is no evidence to the contrary, this theory is well recognized in quantum physics.
Fortunately, Trillo doesn't concern himself with the physics behind it. “A Truncated Story of Infinity” is about the everyday, namely the meeting of two strangers on the street. Little by little, the film explores the possibilities that could ultimately lead to a romantic meeting between the two test subjects - or not. The two protagonists are test subjects, as the film is narrated by a lecturing voice who explains the theory of infinity using this example. Neither the narrator nor the film takes itself too seriously. On the contrary, Trillo's work thrives on clever cuts and a subtle humor that the narrator casually incorporates and which is reflected in the protagonist's everyday, banal adventures.
